Winter Skin Wonders

Courtney, our casting manager and
resident skin-care connoisseur, shares her tips on how
to protect your skin against winter’s worst.

BODY BEAUTIFUL
The products: Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Soy Milk and Honey Body Polish + Kiehl’s Crème de Corps Light-Weight Body Lotion
The process: Use the body polish at least three times a week to keep your skin buffed and smooth. You should always use body lotion everyday but during the harsh winter months I recommend using it even more often to protect your skin from drying out. Cold weather combined with central heating is a killer for skin so hydrate whenever possible!
The perks: The body polish is tough enough to scrub away dry patches on elbows and knees, but gentle enough not to irritate your skin. Plus they both smell absolutely delicious.

LIP SERVICE
The products: Fresh Sugar Lip Polish + Aquaphor
The process: Just like with skin, the golden rule of exfoliating and moisturizing still applies. Rub away dry flakes with the lip polish whenever your lips feel about as smooth as a cheese grater (it happens to us all). Then rub on the ol’ faithful Aquaphor and voilà! Instantly smooth, kissable lips.
The perks: Fresh’s lip polish has real brown sugar crystals in it, so it feels really natural. Aquaphor may not be your most glamorous beauty product, but it’s a tried-and-true favorite that’s stood the test of time.

FACE TIME
The products: Rodin Olio Lusso + Arcona Wine Hydrating Mask
The process: Use this supermoisturizing face mask whenever your skin needs some extra TLC, especially after being buffeted by winter winds. If you need a little extra something in your skin-care regimen, switch to or add a few drops of the Rodin Olio Lusso. Put it on morning and night for superhydrated skin and a luminous glow.
The perks: Olio Lusso is the most luxurious and effective oil out there—I haven’t yet met a woman who hasn’t loved it! As a side note, I’m dying to try their new hand cream. I hear it’s a wonder product and smells amazing. Arcona’s mask is really creamy and actually leaves skin looking firm and silky—it’s the perfect quick fix for looking glowing and camera ready before a big event or a night out.

Behind the Seams: All Buttoned Up

we talked to our trimmings expert, Danielle,
to get the backstory on our beautiful buttons

The process: Our designers bring me their inspiration (usually vintage buttons) and I study their markings and materials to determine which details we can incorporate into our own designs. I’ve been doing this for 20 years, so I can usually figure out right off the bat which manufacturers will be able to put a modern spin on the look we’re going for.

A great resource: Waterbury is among the oldest—if not the oldest—button companies around; they’re actually able to reproduce one-of-a-kind designs they made back in the 1800s, which is pretty amazing. The pieces start out as sheets of brass that are then tooled and molded into the company’s signature items. We use their buttons on all of our peacoats (and the U.S. military just happens to use them for their uniforms too). And, funnily enough, Waterbury is also one of the largest manufacturers of jingle bells. (How’s that for seasonally appropriate?)

Objects of desire: Along with Waterbury’s brass, one of the other materials I love is Corozo. It comes from the tagua nut, which grows in South America (the kind we use comes from Ecuador). It’s typically called vegetable ivory because it looks just like the real thing except it’s more durable, not to mention animal friendly, which we love. And even though the natural finish is beautiful on its own, it also holds other colors wonderfully.

Favorite haunts: I collect buttons myself, and some of my go-to spots around the area are Junk and Jems in Connecticut and various flea markets in upstate New York. Tender Buttons in New York City also has tons of unique options made of everything from glass to horn. They let you buy by the button instead of having to buy in bulk, which is great for mixing and matching buttons on a jacket or a cardigan.

(for those of you not in the know, this tweed has been handwoven for
centuries on an island off the northwest tip of Scotland)

Holiday Helper: The Laundress

using the festive activities from this month’s Looks We Love
as inspiration, the ladies behind The Laundress New York®
reveal their tried-and-true tips for solving those
uh-oh moments this holiday…

1. Makeup: “Blush on your shoulder? Lipstick on the collar? (Too much mistletoe!) No worries—apply The Laundress New York for J.Crew collars & cuffs stain bar and work the stain out with a little water.”

2. Mud and dirt: “Don’t worry about mud on your heels when dashing from store to store. Touch up patent leather with a spray and a wipe of The Laundress Glass and Mirror Cleaner to clean and shine!”

3. Tree sap: “Trimming the tree? Rub the tree sap with an ice cube and then gently scrape off the excess sap. Apply The Laundress New York for J.Crew collars & cuffs stain bar and launder at home.”

4. Static cling: “Don’t be embarrassed. Just spray The Laundress Static Solution in between your stockings and clothes and the static will be gone. Forgot your spray? Just wet your hands and wipe between the layers.”

5. Candle wax: “Too close to the flame? Hot wax can be cleaned off quickly with a blow dryer or a hand dryer. Solid wax should be ironed with a cloth between the fabric and the iron. As soon as you’re home, pretreat with The Laundress Stain Solution and launder with The Laundress Detergent in your machine.”

6. Greasy dips and dressings: “Ask your host or hostess for table salt, cornstarch or baby powder to lift up the stain. Treat further after the party with The Laundress Stain Solution at home.”

D.I.Y. Design: Caught Blue-handed

our crewcuts designers set up shop in a Brooklyn backyard
to try their hand at indigo-dyeing our kids’
Converse® Jack Purcell® sneakers.
here’s how they created these one-of-a-kind kicks…

Indigo’s origins: Indigo is a natural dye that comes from the indigo plant and has a long and beautiful history as a dyestuff—it was mentioned in manuscripts found in India that date back to the 4th century BC!

The dye process: An indigo dye bath is a little finicky to prepare because it is a natural plant material and is more sensitive than a chemical dye bath. It’s important to presoak(1) the items that you are dyeing so that the dye can penetrate the material properly. The trickiest part of the process is getting a specifically desired level of saturation or evenness—we had a lot of happy mistakes!

Why so blue: We’ve done bright colors before, but this time it was really about the ritual of the indigo dye itself—the craftsmanship that goes into making and maintaining the dye bath; the natural, spontaneous results of the hand-dyeing process and the saturated, inky blue color inherent only to this special process.

Fun fact: The bath is actually a green color(2) when prepared—it’s only after the dyed item comes in contact with the air that it oxidizes and reveals the blue color(3).

Wear and tear: A cool part about using indigo versus other dyes is that these shoes will age like your favorite pair of jeans, with dye loss at points of wear (think whisker marks and weathered knees). They get so much cooler with age!

For big kids: Who knows, there may be an adult’s version soon. We dyed a few of our own garments and shoes with supercool results—the men’s and women’s design teams have been ogling us for weeks!

These blue beauties will be available exclusively at our Prince Street store starting today!

FACE
NUXE Crème Fraîche Concentrée: My everyday moisturizing cream.
Santa Maria Novella Rose Water: One of my favorite things in the world! I love to spray it on my face before going to bed—the smell is so soothing to me.
La Roche-Posay Physiological Cleansing Gel: My mom and grandmother always told me not to wash my face with water more than once a week, so I use this gel every night instead.
Guerlain Super Aqua-Night Cream: My ultimate treat. I only use it twice a week (since it’s a little pricey), so it always feels special. Plus, it smells incredible.
Guerlain Météorites Powder for the Face: Illuminating face powder—a must-have.

EYES
Klorane Cornflower Smoothing and Relaxing Patches for Tired Eyes: Amazing eye patches for exhausted eyes. I use them twice a month.
Clarins Eye Contour Balm: This feels very fresh when you put it on and I believe it really does wake my eyes up in the morning!
Aura Cacia Sweet Almond Oil: My favorite way to remove eye makeup. It’s really efficient and totally natural, so it’s perfect for sensitive skin.

HANDS & BODY
NUXE Rêve de Miel: I keep this at my desk and I use it several times a day (my coworkers love to use it too!). It leaves hands so soft and never sticky.
Dior Crème Abricot: My grandmother’s secret to keeping her nails perfect. I use this cream every night and haven’t had cuticles in years!
Dyptique Fresh Lotion for the Body: My favorite body lotion—the smell is to die for.

EXTRAS
Biafine: A miraculous anti-burn cream that actually heals sunburns! I also love the smell.
Fluocaril Toothpaste: The ultimate toothpaste—I could never use another one!

Nikelle, web designer:
“The holidays are coming and I have an overwhelming urge to cover everything in the shiniest, most sparkly material I can find. I’m completely obsessed with anything metallic, especially when it comes to decorating for a festive get-together.”
Inspiration found here and here.

Liv, women’s accessories designer:
“Because I design hair accessories, I love to look at how girls are styling their hair—even if it means covering it up with a chic hat. Everything about her outfit is perfect…if only I was brave enough to wear that hat!”
Inspiration found here.

Travis, window designer:
“We are getting ready to start planning our spring window displays! I love the neon canary yellow against the natural colors of the wood; the contrast of the two elements creates a wonderful tension. This color combo could be reinterpreted in so many ways!”

Vacation Files: Nikelle’s Camping Essentials

Nikelle, one of our web designers, shares her
secrets to mastering the great outdoors…

Every now and then I need to get out of the city and hit the refresh button, so this fall a few friends and I took a camping trip near Bear Mountain—nothing clears my cache like layering on mounds of clothing and waking up under a brightly colored canopy!

Here are some of the camping classics I never leave town without:

Mast Brothers Chocolate—for the ultimate s’more.
Mint leaves—they’re a great natural bug repellent. I rub them all over my clothes and arms to keep me bite free (and smelling good).
Matt Bernson® Artika Boots from Madewell—the dirtier they get, the better they look!
Warm wool camp socks—J.Crew’s are beyond cozy.
A sturdy flask—for hot cocoa (or hot toddys).
A solar-powered crank radio—sometimes even nature needs a soundtrack.
Enamel pots and mugs—I love the blue-and-white speckled ones so much, I use them at home too.
A classic buffalo-check sleeping bag—a good night’s sleep is essential.
A sleek flashlight—Maglites are my favorite.
A cashmere hat and scarf—cashmere is warm and comfortable if you like to sleep in your hat like me.

From the Desk of: Nichole

after getting caught listening to the American Idol
soundtrack one too many times, we begged Nichole,
our resident music buff, for a playlist that won’t get us ridiculed.
she went above and beyond the call of duty…

THE TRIP
My new tradition is to spend the week before Memorial Day in Barcelona for the Primavera Sound Festival. Friends fly in from all over the world and we spend a week basking in the sun, eating the most delicious food, drinking cava, gawking at architect Antoni Gaudí’s works and watching our favorite bands play right on the edge of the Mediterranean.

THE TOUR
I spend about 90 percent of my vacation time following the All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival around the world. The ATP Festival is truly unique in that it’s independent and closely curated by a band or an artist who is involved with every aspect of the festival. In addition, ATP is always based somewhere with an abundance of proper accommodations—no camping necessary! This past year, I’ve visited London, Tokyo, Minehead (in the United Kingdom) and Barcelona, all while following ATP around like a lost puppy. Most recently, I spent a weekend at ATP curated by Portishead in Asbury Park, New Jersey. At every festival, I always meet a band member or an entire band that loves J.Crew.

THE TUNES
My musical taste varies a lot, and most of the bands I love stopped being great (or being together) in the ’90s. Here’s a short list of songs that are either always in rotation or have been in rotation recently, in no particular order:

“In the Aeroplane Over the Sea,” Neutral Milk Hotel
“The Sweat Descends,” Les Savy Fav
“Don’t Cry No Tears,” Neil Young
“It’s Real,” Real Estate
“Incinerate,” Sonic Youth
“Gold Soundz,” Pavement
“Good Fortune,” PJ Harvey
“Te Amo,” Atlas Sound
“Believe,” CANT
“Lovely Day,” Bill Withers
“Trouble (Chad Valley Remix),” Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs
“My Love for You,” ESG
“Real Love,” Factory Floor

As for my karaoke playlist—that’s a completely different ball game!
