we asked the London-based artist Tanya Ling (who originally hails from Calcutta) to create this series of drawings especially for our J.Crew Collection store at Brompton Cross. here, a few of our favorites…
How did you get your start as a fashion illustrator?
I was restless after the birth of my youngest daughter, Evangeline, so my husband suggested I make some drawings, which we exhibited at a friend’s studio. The editors of British Vogue
saw them and commissioned me. After a commission by Harrods, I used the money to take a trip to New York, where my career got underway with projects for Harper’s Bazaar
and U.S. Elle
How would you describe your illustration style?
What’s your favorite fashion memory?
In the spring of 1988, my fashion class at Central Saint Martins traveled to Paris to see a few fashion shows. It was a fabulous trip, and I was able to see the Comme des Garçons show. It was such a thrill to be there.
This is off topic, but we have to admit we have a huge crush on your Instagram account. We love the way you create triptychs across your feed. Are you a big fan of the app?
I love the creative process of posting on Instagram. I just started using it about a year ago, with images of artwork (mine and other artists) that interested me. I realized you could make shapes and patterns with the tiles and just followed my instincts and created a story.
