around the world for inspiration, exploration
and some good old-fashioned relaxation…
CHICAGO
We’ve been in Chicago for quite a while—it’s definitely the city that we would call home. It’s an amazing place for artists, designers and musicians; there is space to work and a very understated, honest approach to creative pursuits. Most of our friends here are musicians and visual artists who live near us in Logan Square. Our favorite restaurant in the world, Lula Café, is in the center of the neighborhood, and we all spend a lot of time together there.
ANTWERP
Antwerp is a small city, but it is densely packed with fashion, art, food, architecture, design and music. There’s something special about the way they treat old spaces and buildings; they have serious reverence for the old but also bring a totally modern new perspective. It’s such a perfect mix of old and new, history and pop at the same time.
NANTUCKET
We love that Nantucket has its own unique culture and that the history of the island is really revered by its residents. We spend all of our time outside, mostly swimming and taking long bike trips to the island’s beaches. Evenings are spent drinking gin and tonics and playing dominos or hanging out at Cisco Brewers. Our bedroom is 50 feet away from the beach, so we fall asleep to the sound of waves.

sensational string sculptures for the crewcuts pages of our June Style Guide.
we went behind the scenes with Brian and Ashley, our star stylists, to learn more.
A minimalist sculptor, artist and printmaker, Fred Sandback is best known for his work with acrylic yarn, which he stretched between walls, ceilings and floors to create abstract forms. “He was able to break up space in a really cool way,” says Ashley.
“Sandback’s affinity for bright colors is so appropriate for crewcuts,” says Brian. “I love how the blue, green and yellow yarns look with our bright, summery pieces. It’s so vibrant and playful!”
“We started by sketching a bunch of different shapes,” the design duo explains. “We wanted to keep everything really simple while giving the kids something to interact with. We love to think of the kids as the people who create our sets.”Visit crewcutkids.com to check out the rest of the shoot > -

outfit for the 2012 Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum
Jenna and head women’s designer Tom Mora walk the red carpetPink Lady: “I felt I had to do something in shocking pink because that’s what Schiaparelli is known for. I sketched the design for this skirt on the back of a piece of paper during a meeting one day about two weeks before the ball. Honda, our patternmaker, draped and stitched the satin right here in the office.”
Shock Factor: “There’s a peplum underneath because I wanted that articulated silhouette I had seen on the pages of Schiaparelli’s Shocking Life. The bow at the waist has wire in it to hold its shape and keep it nice and stiff.”

Denim Diehard: “I didn’t want to wear duchesse silk satin with something sparkly or pearls. I am who I am—so I took it down a notch with denim. We pulled a J.Crew jean jacket and then had it fit and re-tailored to raise the waistband. I’m also not really wearing a shirt underneath—the collar and cuffs were custom-made by my custom shirtmaker and were stitched into the jacket.” -

Indego Africa™ for J.Crew cloth wrap bracelets
So much more than your average bracelet. We love this wraparound style from Indego Africa, a nonprofit project dedicated to providing women artisans in Rwanda the opportunity to sell their beautifully handcrafted pieces to the rest of the world while supporting themselves and their families. And that’s just the beginning: All proceeds are used to create business and literacy programs that encourage entrepreneurship and empower the artisans to become independent businesswomen. These exclusive-to-us bracelets are made from Dutch wax fabric (renowned for its durability and considered a symbol of African solidarity) locally sourced from the markets of Kigali, which the women visit each week to look for the most vibrant colors that perfectly capture the spirit of summer. The final touch: Each bracelet is individually signed by the artist so it’s absolutely unique—much like its story.
