Beauty Notes: A Fresh-Fruit Mask from Tata Harper

the Colombia native and beauty entrepreneur talks to us about starting her own line, the secret behind her glow (hint: We think her Vermont surroundings have something to do with it) and gives us a DIY fresh-fruit face mask that will have you dreaming of summer…

How did growing up in Colombia affect your attitude toward beauty?
I grew up in a house with a lot of women, including my two sisters, mother and grandmother—and sharing beauty rituals was a way for us to spend time together. On Saturday mornings, we would make homemade beauty concoctions and do skin and hair masks…

What inspired you to create your own line of natural products?
After a family member of mine became ill, I was inspired to purge my home and beauty closet of ingredients that I couldn’t trust. I started swapping everything out for natural, nontoxic alternatives, but I couldn’t find a replacement for my high-performance anti-aging skin care. It didn’t exist, so I realized I had to create it myself.

Why did you decide to manufacture your products in Vermont?
Most beauty companies don’t manufacture their own products, so what we’re doing is pretty unusual. With 100 percent natural products, we’re dealing with very delicate ingredients that need extra care. We source natural ingredients from around the world, as well as our own farm in Vermont, and create our products by hand in small batches.

Is there any one product you swear by?
The Elixir Vitae serum. It works wonders for my skin.

Beauty icons?
Christy Turlington and Carolyn Murphy.

Studio Tour: RMS Beauty®

it’s a little-known fact that makeup artist Rose-Marie Swift, the founder of RMS Beauty, offers one-on-one tutorials out of her Greenwich Village apartment. we dropped by for the scoop on her namesake organic makeup line and the trick to mastering that J.Crew-model glow.
“As a little girl, I was obsessed with the images of movie stars,” says Rose-Marie. But after years as one of the top makeup artists in the industry, she began to notice how taking a quick-fix approach to beauty can drastically damage skin. So she started her own line, using organic ingredients that nourish and soothe skin. Rose-Marie does everything from storing products in her own fridge to naming everything herself (“I just look at the color and go with a word that has that emotion”).
The best way to apply Living Luminizer? “Dab along the cheekbones, brow line and the bow of the lips,” she says. “It also looks great at the center of the lid and corners of the eyes, giving a beautiful reflective glow to the eyes.” Then, simply use Lip2Cheek to add some color—it combines nourishing oils and pure mineral pigments so it’s actually good for skin.

Meet Nature Baby®

we met with Georgia and Jacob, the parents behind the New Zealand–based line
of adorable organic baby clothes, to talk inspiration, natural materials and their
obsession with stripes (which, of course, we happen to share)…
Tell us why you decided to start Nature Baby.
When we had our first child, we fell in love with the idea that we could make
beautiful and pure products for our baby—and that other people would want them
for their kids too.

What was the first product you made?
That’s going back a while! Most likely an organic cotton kimono bodysuit or an
organic merino wool baby jumper. Back when we began, organic textiles were just
beginning, so we would have to call up farms to see who was growing the raw
product. Then we had to take it through all the processes ourselves, via mills and
knitters, to create the final fabric.
What’s been your proudest moment so far?
Walking down the street in New York and seeing a baby wearing our stripe booties.
We love that people get what we are into, no matter where they are.

What’s an average day like for you?
It usually starts with walking our dog, Maggie, then getting the kids off to school,
followed by visiting our stores in Auckland and finally heading into the office.
We always have new samples coming through, so we have to choose colors, do fittings
and refine the designs. What we do is all in the details!

How would you describe the Nature Baby for J.Crew collection in
three words?

Seaside, horizons and purity.
