get to know our West Coast friends The Ross Sea Party…
From left to right: Mark Tillman (guitar), Jacquelyn Thropay (keys), William Vanderwyden (bass), Mike Nussbaum (drums) and Brady Erickson (guitar and lead vocals). What’s the story behind “In Cairo,” which we selected for our Looks We Love video?Brady:
It’s a song about the way that music, dancing and body language transcend spoken language. Plus, it’s a subtle nod to the Cure, one of my all-time favorites.Tell us more about the story behind the album cover design.Brady:
In addition to playing music, I’m also a painter, and I end up creating a lot of the artwork for the band. The cover of the album is artwork I originally created as a poster for a live show just as we were wrapping up the album.
Who were some of your musical influences while growing up?
Mark: We all represent different corners of the country—from SoCal to the “dirty South” to the heartland. I had access to my parents’ vault of vinyl—not to mention a college rock fascination with the nearby Athens, Georgia, music scene—so music captured me at a very young age.
Brady: I’ve always been most inspired by watching artists play live, so I think I’ve been most influenced by dozens of local bands—punk bands that I could see in person and listen to at dangerously high volumes.
What do you love most about living and being musicians in LA?
Brady: LA offers a constant supply of inspiration. In addition to the countless great musicians and places to see, hear and buy music, the city is also so diverse that—even having lived here for over 10 years—I still see it as a foreign and mysterious place. Oh, and the weather ain’t bad either.
What band(s) are you guys excited about now?
Mike: I can’t speak for everyone’s particular tastes, but right now I’m into Vacationer, Lord Huron, Cayucas, Jagwar Ma, Papa, Heartless Bastards and White Arrows.
